Improvement and development of separate waste collection system in Saldus municipality

The Municipality of Saldus intends to implement the project ‘Improvement and development of separate waste collection system in Saldus Municipality’ over the next two years. The main objective of the project is to develop a separate waste collection system in Saldus Municipality, promoting waste preparation for re-use, recycling and recovery, thus ensuring the achievement of the indicators set out in the South Kurzeme Regional Waste Management Plan for 2023-2027 for the promotion of the circular economy. Both squares will be located in places easily accessible to residents, but the Brocēni square is particularly advantageous – it will be located 200 m from the A9 motorway ‘Riga – Liepāja’, and any passer-by from Kurzeme will be able to bring the worn-out electrical equipment there. It is planned to introduce a new, previously unused type of waste collection, i.e. APRITES SKAPI, into the squares built in both areas. The goal of the circular cabinet is to bring or receive things in the cabinet that are still usable and can be useful to someone else. Circular cabinets will be designed to reduce the waste of items that are still suitable for use, as well as to promote the principle of re-use, the principle of non-creation of new waste and to highlight the need for a change in public behaviour. Changes are needed to raise awareness of the circular economy and to achieve common EU waste reduction targets. The municipality will dedicate almost a tenth of the total cost of the project to the organisation of public education and environmental awareness-raising activities – there will be educational presentations for municipal employees, teachers, association activists and business managers. There are planned waste sorting master classes in the courtyards of apartment houses in Saldus and Broceni and waste electrical goods and waste paper collection campaigns in kindergartens and schools. Quality handouts will be prepared and delivered to every private house in Saldus county. Circular economy enthusiasts will create attractive online information materials for placement on the websites of Saldus municipality, parish administrations, kindergartens, schools and waste managers about the nature of the project and its positive impact and possibilities to carry out waste recycling on the spot in Latvia, in compliance with the principle of ‘self-sufficiency and proximity’.The municipality has committed that at the end of the first year of the implemented project, the amount of separately collected waste in both squares will be 380 tonnes in total and the separately collected municipal waste will be further used and their recycling products and materials will be returned to economic circulation in the amount of 94.6% of the collected waste. The total cost of the project is EUR 511 818.00, where the Cohesion Fund funding will be 60% or EUR 311 253.00, while the financing of Saldus municipality will be 40% or EUR 200 565.00. The project will be implemented between 1 July 2025 and 1 July 2027. The amount of separately collected waste - 380 tons.
