Improvement of the Priekule rainwater system in the residential area of Liepaja Street

In the project "Improvement of the Priekules rainwater system in the residential district of Liepaja Street", the municipality of Southern Kurzeme Municipality plans to carry out works to improve the rainwater system in the residential district of Liepaja Street in Priekule, ensuring the reduction of flood risks and the ability to adapt to climate change and reduce the risks of disasters caused by it. The project complies with the implementing rules of the first project application selection round of measure 2.1.3.1 "Municipal adaptation to climate change" of the specific support objective 2.1.3 "Promotion of climate change adaptation, risk prevention and resilience to disasters" of the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme 2021-2027.The project envisages to carry out works to improve the capacity and quality of the existing rainwater collection system in the residential area of Liepaja Street, Priekule. The existing rainwater collection system in the residential area of Liepaja Street is functionally insufficient. Its capacity prevents water from being efficiently discharged during heavy rainfall, which causes floods, endangers the safety of infrastructure and citizens. It is planned to carry out works to improve the existing rainwater system, including the creation of a wetland area. As a result of the project, rainwater will be captured from the roofs of nine apartment houses and the driveway with hard cover, diverting the collected rainwater to the established wetland area and the existing drainage ditch. The planned infrastructure is intended as an extension of the capacity of the existing system, creating additional possibilities for collecting, draining and managing rainwater. The project activities will significantly contribute to the ability to adapt to climate change, reducing the risk of flooding, improving water quality and infrastructure sustainability, as well as public safety. The direct target group of the project is the residents of the residential houses in Priekule district of Liepaja Street in the region of Southern Kurzeme, who live and have declared their place of residence in the project area, where the works to improve the rainwater system are planned. The inhabitants of the municipality living in the project area have a significant need for rainwater drainage infrastructure efficiency improvement works, because under the influence of flooding and excessive humidity the residential area is affected, causing damage to the environment and causing discomfort to the inhabitants. Circumstances pose a potential threat to safety and affect quality of life, making the works to improve the rainwater system a priority need. The total eligible financing of the project is EUR 560 389.47 with value added tax, of which the financing of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is EUR 476 331.05 and EUR 84 058.42 with local government co-financing. The project is expected to be implemented by Q1 2026.
