Restoration of the vessel traffic control centre of the Freeport of Ventspils and electrification of berths

The objective of the project ‘Renovation of the vessel traffic control centre of the Freeport of Ventspils and electrification of berths’ (‘the project’) is to develop environmentally friendly port infrastructure, reducing the impact of ports on the urban environment, climate and improving port safety. In order to ensure the achievement of the objective, the following two activities will be implemented within the framework of the Project: the renewal of the port vessel traffic management system, within the framework of which the supply and installation of equipment necessary for the management of vessel traffic will be carried out, including surveillance, communication and communication, the renewal, rebuilding and construction of structures necessary for the installation of equipment; Construction of the electrical grid connection points of vessels arriving at berth No 16, within the framework of which the installation of a shore-side electricity supply point with a total capacity of 4000 kW will be carried out, providing at least two freight passenger (RO-PAX) vessels with a connection, in accordance with the requirements of Article 9 of Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 September 2023 on the deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure with regard to shore-side electricity supply in maritime ports. As a result of the implementation of the project, the value of the output indicator ‘number of ports invested in public infrastructure development, including environmentally friendly port infrastructure development, availability of alternative fuels, electricity grid connections at berth and ensuring safe navigation conditions’ will be achieved: one port. Activities under the project will not only improve maritime safety, but also lead to a significant reduction in environmental pollution. On the basis of calculations made by the Freeport of Ventspils Authority, the following environmental improvements will be achieved: By ensuring the supply of shore-side electricity to ships visiting the Freeport of Ventspils, the amount of CO2 emissions will decrease by 1 382 tonnes/year; By providing opportunities to reduce ship downtime for ships visiting the Freeport of Ventspils, the amount of CO2 emissions will decrease by 41 tons/year. The total eligible costs of the project are EUR 4 018 579.41, of which EUR 3 415 792.50 is from the European Union Cohesion Fund and EUR 602 786.91 from Ventspils Freeport Authority. The implementation period of the project ‘Renovation of Ventspils Freeport Ship Traffic Management Centre and electrification of berths’ is in accordance with the terms of the Agreement on the implementation of the project, which stipulates that the implementation of the project will be completed by 31 December 2027.
