From biomass to human health: bioconversion of oat husk with microalgae for the production of compounds with immunomodulating properties. (ALGAE2HEALTH)

The scientific objective of the project (ALGAE2HEALTH) is to conduct an interdisciplinary collaborative industrial research to develop a new and integrated waste-free oat husk biorefining process using microalgae bioconversion and obtaining high value-added ingredient streams with immunomodulating properties (xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS), omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants). The project will contribute to the development of three specialisation areas identified in the Latvian Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3): ‘Knowledge-intensive bioeconomy’; ‘Biomedicine, medical technology, pharmaceuticals’; ‘Photonics and intelligent materials, technologies and engineering systems’. The project concerns a development priority: Future growth sectors where high value-added products and services exist or are likely to emerge. The ALGAE2HEALTH project will address two main areas of concern: human health and well-being, especially in the context of strengthening immunity, and the development of environmentally friendly technologies to promote the development of the biorefinery industry and the transition to the production of environmentally responsible ingredients. The project is implemented by the University of Latvia as a research organisation in cooperation with two industrial partners, SIA Biorefic (a start-up specialising in the processing of ligno-cellulosic waste) and SIA Ramkalni Nordeco (a producer of food products, including functional food). The project is highly interdisciplinary and covers the following areas: biotechnology and microbiology (represented by the University of Latvia), chemistry (represented by project partner SIA Biorefic) and food technology (represented by project partner SIA Ramkalni Nordeco). The project also promotes areas such as health and nutrition. Total cost of the project: 656 455.13 EUR, including ERDF 510 065.65 EUR Project partners - economic operator project share 41% of total eligible costs Project duration: 36 months. The project will be implemented from 01.07.2025 to 30.06.2028. The mid-term report of the project is planned to be submitted on 31.12.2026. The project is non-economic. Scientific manager of the project: Dr.biol Armands VīgantsMain research activities: Optimization of XOS production methods from oat hulls;Development of microalgae cultivation technology using oat hull hydrolysate-based substrates;Development of polyfunctional product formulas (including XOS and microalgae-based biologically active ingredients), assessment of the biological activity of these formulas;testing the impact of these formulas on various polyfunctional food properties.ALGAE2HEALTH promotes eco-innovative technologies and will promote the development of zero-waste technologies, as the resulting knowledge can be used in the future to produce industrial-scale high added-value products from renewable agricultural residues such as oat hulls.Planned results: a new technology prototype (TRL 4) for the production of microalgae biomass (with high content of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants), growing on oat husk hydrolysate-based substrates;a prototype of a new polyfunctional product (with XOS and microalgae-based biologically active ingredients) (TRL 4);a single intellectual property license agreement;four scientific publications in scientific journals or materials from international conferences indexed in Scopus or Web of Science. Keywords: lignocellulose biorefining, algae biorefining, microalgae, omega-3 fatty acids, xylo-oligosaccharides, prebiotics.
