The ongoing digital revolution in shipping and its effects are intensifying with increasing demands, for example on the environment. (Satakunta Growth Opportunity Final Report 2020, 31). The maritime industry and technology have a lot of potential in the blue economy. Satakunta's blue growth expertise strengthens smart specialization and opportunities for growth. The laser is used in a number of different machining processes, where it is typically a truly digital machining method. Processes use a laser beam, a computer program that controls the movement and power of the beam, and in some cases, camera vision that checks when the process is complete. These applications are numerous, for example in the marking of electronics. One of the latest industrialized processes is the preparation of the aircraft's paint surface, which is done for all business aircraft approximately every 6 years. In this application, the laser-based process is displacing traditional technology, thanks to its environmental friendliness, economy and digitalisation. The preparation of the surface to be painted and the cleaning of the surface before painting are done in several different stages in shipbuilding. The work is typically a heavy, dirty, and difficult craft with a rather large and vague carbon footprint. The main objective of this project is to bring the surface preparation of the surface to be painted (abbreviated as MPE) to the level required by shipbuilding applications so that the potential of the technology is known economically and from an environmental point of view. The sub-objectives of the project aim to comprehensively meet the main objective. The sub-objectives are: 1.To get an overall picture of the currently available shot blasting technology and laser technology, especially from the perspectives of their environmental impact and economy. 2.The suitability of different lasers for the preparation of the surface to be painted under laboratory conditions is tested. 3.Based on laboratory tests, the most promising laser technologies are tested in a real operating environment. 4.Identify the most economically advantageous alternative to laser technology in the context of shipbuilding and analyze the effects of the introduction of digital technologies on companies' business models, especially from an economic point of view. The digital revolution is present in shipping and the effects are intensifying along with growing demands. Modern order-supply chains make efficient use of new technologies, e.g. minimizing environmental impact.
