Maritime Research Laboratory - MARILAB

The functioning of society and business in Satakunta is entirely dependent on functioning transport logistics chains. Logistics chains are energy-intensive and still use a lot of fossil fuels. In order to meet regional, national and international carbon neutrality targets, logistics chains need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency in a number of ways. The project has been prepared through a systematic collaboration and the need for a research laboratory has become a key issue. The research themes of carbon neutrality and security of supply will be the research priorities of the research laboratory. The MARILAB project will establish a research laboratory at the Maritime Logistics Research Center and will consolidate its activities as a new solution for reducing emissions. An investment in a simulator will be made in the research laboratory (investment project, application number 401426). During the MARILAB project, the simulator will be used to carry out demonstrations on emission reductions and energy efficiency in key maritime logistics topics: remote piloting, digital testing environment and optimisation of maritime logistics processes. The impact of the demonstrations will be assessed and scaled up to real-life examples. As a result of the MARILAB project, the research laboratory has become a widely recognised and acknowledged centre of excellence in maritime logistics as part of the Maritime Logistics Research Center. The Research Laboratory serves the entire maritime logistics community. The laboratory hosts research and product development teams of international excellence related to the Research Center. The simulator investment will create digitalisation benefits for RDI work, promoting the uptake and scaling of RDI results to enable business growth. The research laboratory will strengthen and raise the Satakunta's maritime logistics expertise to a new level in the areas of carbon neutrality and security of supply. The simulator facilities in Rauma will be made available to companies and other potential actors, in particular in the areas of carbon neutrality and security of supply, in accordance with open access principles.
