Recreational trails are an important asset for tourism areas to ensure climate responsible product offer. Hiking and other nature-based activities have very low carbon footprint. The signage and guidance system on the trails should be functional and meet the needs of the trail users to ensure a good customer experience. It is also a necessary requirement from customer safety perspective. The signage system in Syöte Tourism Area is severely outdated both technically and functionally - the tourism area has both expanded and undergone significant investments in its functions. Majority of the sign posts are at least 15 years old and in poor condition. Therefore the users of recreational trails and routes (over 300 000 in 2021) for hiking, cross-country skiing, mountain biking etc. have challenges in finding their way across the trail system. This project is a first phase in renewing the signage system in Syöte. The main aim is to design a comprehensive and coherent signage plan (focused in signposting) for the whole tourism area. As a main result of the project, the signage plan enables the next phase, aiming to implement the plan. The project aims to apply best practice in signage design in Finland and utilise the experiences from similar projects in other National Parks of Finland. The project improves the climate readiness of the tourism area through design of guidance system that is adapted to changing climate conditions, motivates customers to climate responsible activities and has minimal carbon footprint.
