Towards photo-realistic point clouds and open data (EKOPOINT)

The project tests what kind of experiential and open 3D data media productions in the film, music, real estate, tourism and art sectors would need to support their business. The project produce and distributing open photo-realistic 3D point cloud data. The business potential of the project is reflected by the estimates made by a number of parties, such as Citigroup Inc., evaluating the Metaversum economy at around 7--12 trillion euros by 2030. Towards photo-realistic point clouds and open data -project helps to improve digital capabilities by developing suitable, cost-effective solutions for producing accurate 3D data for various production environments, while aiming to share data openly. This improves opportunities for SMEs, the public sector and citizens to generate, analyze and utilise data. Until now, the problem has been the costly equipment needed, as well as the limited availability of data. Open data as a new business requires experiments, in which the project group has strong experience. Renewed media production promotes accessibility in society. Technological development enables global, accessible, and mobile productions and availability via the internet. The open 3D materials developed in the project are like photographs or videos from the real world, while being photo-realistic virtual models, made on a computer. One can move freely inside a model or use it as though it was a film. Effectively, the only operator in Finland with the necessary know-how is the MeMo institute, applying for the project. The goals of the project are 1) To form a national, functioning point cloud ecosystem. 2) To produce open, cost-effective, accurate and accessible 3D data for the use of target groups. 3) To pilot and test different implementations in the living labs of several different industries. 4) To obtain added value when a third party builds services based on them. 5) Develop new business opportunities based on living lab pilot cases, making extensive use of both XR and service design, identifying the information security and security risks of the data to be shared, as well as data ownership. 6) Distributing data in various formats and platforms, such as raw data or classified data, or project files for CAD platforms or game engines. 7) Share know-how in Uusimaa. The work packages of the project are: WP1 Developing a functional EkoPoint -ecosystem. WP2 The project members selected as Living labs are Finnish and internationally recognized operators in their respective fields: LL1 Purkutalo collective, LL2 YLE Possibilities of renewable media production and journalism, LL3 3D virtual exhibitions, LL4 Art museums and the National Museum, LL5 Point clouds in music and event productions, LL6 Possibilities of point clouds in film productions, advertising and media productions, LL7 Point clouds in performing arts LL8 Point clouds in cultural sites, LL9: Public works of art, LL10 Unforeseen experiments and events. WP3 Open data and production processes, formats, contracts and licenses. WP4 Sharing and opening open materials. WP5: Interaction, communication and coordination. Over 30 operators have pledged to the project's interaction group, incl. YLE, National Museum, Opera and Ballet, and musicians and Purkutaide-kollektiivi. The project utilises following methods of interaction: online brainstorming sessions, living labs, hackathons, demos, social media, workshops, meetings, experiments and trainings with various environments, presentations and publications, as well as implementations. Interaction and effectiveness are measured throughout the project using surveys, interviews, and statistical data. At the end of the project, a final event (seminar) will be organised to publish the results of the project.
