Urban&Local - Future Food Ecosystem

An edible city, where food production is close to the consumer, is part of a sustainable future. The Urban&Local project will create a local food and restaurant sector ecosystem promoting related RDI co-operation and business in the metropolitan area, and develop related experimental platforms. The project will help identify and test innovative and sustainable production, market and supply chain solutions for urban restaurant and local food services, and support the emergence of new innovative products and services. This will increase the long-term competitiveness of companies in the sector, while supporting regional carbon-neutral goals and the emergence of a more sustainable food system as part of regional development. The project strengthens the region's food culture, attractiveness and business friendliness. The aim is also to increase international networking related to the sector's RDI and business ecosystem. The project has been prepared in collaboration with the cities of Helsinki and Vantaa, as well as the RDI organizations Metropolia UAS, Haaga-Helia UAS, and Perho Culinary, Tourism and Business College. The project is coordinated by Forum Virium Helsinki, an innovation company owned by the City of Helsinki. The primary target group of the project is SMEs (foodtech) in the food and restaurant sector and related businesses in the Uusimaa Region. The second target group are other actors involved in the food sector, such as RDI organizations and cities providing experimental platforms. The indirect target group of the project is e.g. future professionals in the field, i.e. students of the relevant educational institutions. The project will create a new connections and practices related to research, development and innovation, forms of data collection and data sharing, and innovative business inventions. At the same time, piloting is used to promote the emergence and implementation of new solutions and joint development between the SMEs, cities and RDI organizations in the region, and especially in the Helsinki metropolitan area. The project's stakeholder collaboration brings new technologies and research results to the target groups. The priorities of the project's pilots are: 1) Utilization of new technologies and digitalisation in the production of sustainable urban food and related services and products, 2) Testing innovative future technologies and solutions supporting the circular economy in the food services and local food production on selected experimentation platforms. The project supports the goals of Uusimaa Smart Specialization Strategy by creating sustainable growth based on innovations and strengthening challenge-based innovation activities. The project also supports the strategy's goals of reforming industry and increased opportunities for growth and internationalization. The project implements the goals of developing services, renewal of cooperation and development practices, growth of know-how and development of regional innovation ecosystems and networks. The project also supports the national RDI roadmap by creating new partnership model in the field, in which companies are key research partners and driving forces. At the same time, the project supports the goal of developing new ecosystems. The project also supports the ERDF objectives by strengthening the research and innovation capacity of the region and introduction of new technologies. The project also implements well the strategies and business policy programs of the two participating cities, Helsinki and Vantaa; In Helsinki, especially the goals of increasing cooperation between the city and the business community, strengthening the experimental culture, and using flexible urban spaces. In Vantaa, the project supports the city strategy’s goal of courage, which seeks trendsetting and maintaining the culture of experimentation, thereby strengthening the city's attractiveness.
