Nature activities and the recreational use of nature have a positive effect on people's health and well-being, and at the same time also have considerable regional economic effects. As climate change progresses and with adaptation to its effects, the importance of nearby nature will grow even more in the activities of people and communities. The importance of nature-based tourism in Kuusamo is significant. The value basis of the city strategy for the years 2021-2025 is love for neighbor and nature. The strategy outlines Kuusamo's harmonious life with nature and building well-being from nature. The priority areas of the strategy are e.g. tourism, economic development, sustainable utilization of natural resources, and accessibility and connections. The strategic goal of Town of Kuusamo is to implement investments of more than 200 million euros in sustainable businesses in the years 2021-2025. The climate change affects the important nature based tourism, which is completely dependent on nature's conditions and climate. Therefore there is a need in nature-based tourism activities to prepare for changing conditions due to the impact of climate change. To support these needs, the Gateway to National Park project has been prepared. Tthe investments will be located mainly in the Eastern Ruka area. The project supports the development of year-round nature tourism alongside nature-based tourism focused on winter. The goal of the project is to strengthen the climate resilience of nature tourism by developing the trails and their year-round use possibilities. Thereby, the project supports the adaptation of nature tourism companies to climate change by improving the company's operating conditions year-round and enables companies to develop their business for changing climate conditions. The project develops the infrastructure of nature tourism routes to carbon-neutral direction by piloting smart lighting solutions in the area. Smart lighting and the associated control system improve energy efficiency and reduce electricity consumption. The goal is to use the site as a pilot site and to utilize the experiences gained in the project about smart solutions in other sites in the area as well. The measure of the project are: Measure 1: Construction of outdoor route base changes to the current route between Vuosselintie underpass-Saarua parking lot (990 m) Measure 2: Implementation of smart lighting, control system and light effects for the Saarua light trail (6.2 km) and implementation of light effects for the planned outdoor route Project implementation schedule: Implementation will start in the spring of 2023 and continue to the end of 2024. During 2023, the construction of the structural layers of the outdoor trail will be carried out and part of the lighting work and during 2024 the rest of the lighting work.
