PilotGreen

The PilotGreen -project is developing new and innovative green infrastructure solutions in urban experimental environments. They have been identified as necessary solutions for adapting to climate change and increasing biodiversity in a dense urban environment. The aim of the project is to increase and expand the sector's cross-regional RDI cooperation and to develop innovative solutions that increase the smart & green business of companies, including internationally, and create a climate-sustainable urban environment. The idea of the project is based on previous projects in the Helsinki Region, which in recent years have emphasized the development of proactive urban planning and solutions utilizing digitalization. In the PilotGreen project, the focus is shifted more on developing companies' business benefits through the development of experimental environments and on strengthening RDI cooperation. The project aims to bring together developers of physical and modular solutions and green infrastructure solutions integrated onto buildings, as well as developers of digital solutions, and also to bring along new technology players in the sector. The target groups of the project are the cities and municipalities of Uusimaa and Päijät-Häme Regions, RDI actors, SMEs in the field and procuring companies. The project partners are the City of Helsinki's innovation company Forum Virium Helsinki and the Universities of Applied Science Metropolia and LAB, which bring along their RDI expertise, their extensive networks and students. PilotGreen works closely also with the cities of Helsinki and Lahti. The aim is to reform the green infrastructure sector by connecting new actors and encouraging them to develop creative, disruptive solutions. In addition, the aim is to provide cities and municipalities an understanding of the usability and impact of these solutions, and to engage public actors in procuring agile and further investments. The project activates an extensive RDI network to reform the green infrastructure sector and direct it to co-develop innovative solutions. The needs of the actors are mapped in Finland, and a comprehensive understanding of the international market situation is also compiled. Based on these, several agile piloting programs will be launched, which will be implemented in different pilot environments in Helsinki, Lahti and Metropolia's living lab facilities. In these, the solutions are jointly developed, tested and piloted. Based on the pilots, companies gain understanding on how the solutions work in a real-life environment, as well as comprehensive user feedback. Companies are also offered the opportunity to participate in innovation projects where technology studies and product development are provided. Based on the pilots, cities will gain information on the functionality and effectiveness of the solutions. Procurement training and supporting information for wider green infrastructure investments will be offered to public authorities and contracting companies e.g. real estate developers. As a result of the project, the RDI network has expanded and will continue to operate after the project. The first of the new green infrastructure solutions has been commercialized and has begun to scale for the benefit of cities, municipalities and citizens. The effectiveness of the project will be verified quantitatively and qualitatively, and the activities will also result a number of surveys, evaluations, expert articles, theses and a handbook for cities entitled “How to act as an experimental environment for green infrastructure”. In this way, the lessons of the project can be widely disseminated in support of regional development. The project supports well the objectives of the Regional Smart Specialization Strategies as well as the objectives of the ERDF program and enhances the implementation of the national RDI roadmap.
