Co-creation of Autonomous Future - Self-driving Technology and Future Data

Autonomous systems are slowly entering society. They come in the form of systems like Alepa transport robots Starship, autonomous vehicles and services such as last-mile robot buses. What all these services have in common is that they produce a significant amount of spatial information about the environment in real time for their own decision-making. Social actors (municipalities and cities) can also access such materials in future. How should such materials be processed to derive solutions to the problems of society and municipalities/cities? The technical platform of the project is the ARVO self-driving car developed at the FGI 2017-2022 (there are only a few self-driving cars in Finland). Arvo has the best state-of-art sensors for intelligent positioning and observation of the environment. The project has been developed as a by-product of the Academy of Finland's Center of Excellence for Laser Scanning by applicants FGI and Aalto/MeMo. The applied project self-driving cars and future data will derive using various case studies for both the achieved benefits (accuracies, performance) and optimal technical and scientific solutions for processing chains that can be developed and used by end users. The project increases national (and indirectly international) understanding of the possibilities of data from autonomous systems in solving different real-life problems in society. The project informs the most important actors in Uusimaa and Finland about the data possibilities by self-driving cars. The project explores the possibilities of the platform economy and actors for the operation of the data produced by self-driving cars, so that cities and other actors would get the service they want. In the project, several case study sites are selected and case studies and analyzes are performed on them, depicted more detail in WPs. We open case study materials internationally and make a roadmap study of the data possibilities of autonomous systems in different areas of society. At the same time, we are developing MML Paikkatietokeskus' Location Innovation Hub (Eu Digital Innovation Hub) from the data produced by autonomous systems and its possibilities, so that information can be transferred to start-ups/spin-offs/other actors in the industry in the future. We promote the utilization and piloting of digitization and digital technologies in R&D activities (e.g. open data, robotics, automation, data analytics, artificial intelligence) as well as innovations and digitization of smart and low-emission mobility. We support the introduction of new digital work methods and the cooperation of public, private and third sector actors and the joint development of services. We support the launch, development and cooperation of digital innovation hubs at the European, national and regional level. We support improving the real-timeness of traffic data and promoting information about traffic services and situational and situational information at the national and regional level, as well as bringing the various possibilities of digitalization, such as virtuality, into the service field. According to the preliminary investigation, Forum Virium, City of Helsinki, City of Espoo, Land Survey, Finnish Railways Agency, Traficom, Sensible4, Unikie, Roadscanners, Field Group, Terrasolid, Sweco, WSP, SitoWise, Ramboll, PEAB, Novatron, Nordic Geocenter, Geotrim, Sick AG Oy/AG, Metropolia and the Taxi Association are interested in the project collaboration. During the execution of the project, cooperation is opened to all possible companies. The leader of the project has been assessed (microsoft research.com) as Finland's leading researcher both in the area of Technology and Engineering (rank 1) and in Environmental Sciences (rank 8), https://research.com/u/juha-hyyppa. He is also the world's most cited researcher in the field of laser scanning. Both FGI and Aalto are the world's leading researchers in the field of mobile laser scanning.
