ETAB - Energy Transition for Apartment Buildings

ETAB - Energy Transition for Apartment Buildings project promotes the transition of the energy system in Southwest Finland towards carbon neutrality and local production by strengthening the expertise of companies and housing companies in system design and procurement. The project will raise awareness of the potential of the systems among target groups through communication and participation activities and by developing networks in the field. Finland's goal of carbon neutrality by 2035 requires an increase in renewable energy production in the country's building stock. Housing consumes around 22 TWh/year of energy in the whole country, a significant part of which is consumed by housing companies, of which there are around 90 000 in Finland. Therefore, housing associations play an important role in building a carbon-neutral energy system in Southwest Finland and beyond. The project will promote energy efficiency in housing companies and investment in new energy systems such as photovoltaics, battery storage and electric car charging systems. It will also explore the use of energy communities in housing associations. Designing a large-scale system requires strong skills that are not widely available. The project will bridge this gap between customers (housing associations) and companies (designers, energy system providers and implementers). The project will address the whole energy system of the housing estate, including through pilot projects, including energy storage and charging possibilities for electric cars, promoting energy security and boosting low-carbon mobility. The project will set up a network of housing associations to share knowledge and experience on energy systems. Business skills are an important factor in the uptake of solutions, as technology is developing rapidly and businesses do not always have sufficient knowledge of how to apply new technologies or of the opportunities offered by new legislation. The project will provide companies with information on the needs of housing companies and identify their skills to meet these needs. On the basis of this mapping, needs-based specific training will be provided. The project will also promote low-carbon construction more widely by developing the RDI ecosystem in the sector in Finland. As a result of the project, the energy business of housing companies will be boosted and the competitiveness of companies in the region will improve as they will have access to reliable information and know-how to make new energy investments. Companies can also use the new knowledge for other business areas, such as energy solutions for the municipal and business sectors. An energy system based on renewable energy production and smart energy use is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy independence and securing future jobs and business opportunities. The results of the project will therefore have a wider impact on the carbon neutrality objectives of Southwest Finland and the attractiveness of the region.
