Fast lane to reuse

The purpose of the Fast lane to reuse project is to establish the reception and processing of goods to be reused from households in the region into a regional cooperation network, in addition to the third sector. To mainstream operations and increase effectiveness, regional companies who develop new business ideas are needed. During the project, a service that supports and inspires the business life of urban areas will be developed, which is intended to remain in operation after the project and expand even further. The project creates and pilots an operating model for the reception of reusable goods and materials prepared for reuse in connection with waste management services. Turun Ekotori develops its reception functions as a combined reception pilot at the Topinoja waste center in Turku and in connection with collecting on wheels. Turun Ekotori Reuse Centre is an independent non-profit environmental operator managed by Kestävän Kehityksen Yhdistys ry, which, in addition to recycling, provides employment on a large scale. Goods that are suitable for re-use as such are usable directly or with minor repairs. Preparing the material for reuse means recovering and diverting material that could be used again or as a raw material for another product for further use by companies or consumers. The goal is to create stable reuse operating models for the region (networks, goal-oriented and planned cooperation models, and partnerships) that will support companies and other actors in the region in the future as well. The project produces information about the positive environmental effects of reuse and develops communication methods to increase it. The operating model developed in the project can be duplicated for free use in other areas as well. The project produces information about materials prepared for reuse to support the development of circular economy know-how. The city of Turku's goal is to implement the principles of resource wisdom by 2040: no waste, no emissions and sustainable consumption of natural resources. The city aims to be carbon neutral by 2029 and aims to become a climate-positive region from then on. The operational and service platform of reuse has been included as part of the circular economy road map of Turku as concrete measures to achieve resource wisdom. The “Fast lane to reuse” project is a concrete step towards implementation. During the pilot, information is collected about the composition and properties of the material to be reused, as well as customer needs. Based on the information obtained, the product groups created from the materials are defined, taking into account the needs of downstream users. The processing of the materials will be developed so that companies and communities in the region have more opportunities to use them. Based on the results of the pilot, if necessary, the operating model can be developed and scaled to other reception locations and to the needs of various operators.
