The landscaping industry practices in developing nature based solutions

Preparing for the consequences of climate change in urban environment requires sustainable solutions in urban landscape structure. Along with the warming climate the extreme weather phenomena, such as heavy rain and heat waves, become more frequent. Furthermore, the warming climate creates additional challenges concerning the prevention of biodiversity loss as the changing conditions and alien species cause additional threats to nature. The Nature Based Solutions (NBS) provide good instruments preventing the negative consequences of climate change in urban areas. The NBS can be utilized to prevent flooding (urban runoff), control temperature (heat island effect) and carbon sequestration. In addition, NBS support biodiversity, general comfort, and well-being. Almost all the municipalities are currently struggling with prevention of climate change and biodiversity loss. Previous reports (e.g. by Sitra and Kuntaliitto) show that the municipalities need resources, best practice sharing and instructions for their work with climate and biodiversity. Information about various NBS is fairly well available but applying them in municipalities has still been modest. The aim of this project is to identify the decision-making processes and key persons concerning the NBS use in municipalities and provide training based on challenges found. The project starts with mapping out the decision-making process and stakeholders involved in NBS chosen municipalities. Based on the results, there will be a workshop arranged for the persons representing different levels of decision-makers and executors concerning the NBS use. The goal of the workshop is to identify the mechanisms that are preventing the large scale use of natural based solutions. After the eralier mentioned steps, the project team will build and arrange a tailored training series aiming to clarify the benefits, applications and use of NBS. The project aims to support use of NBS as a tool in preparing for climate change and for enriching the biodiversity in the urban landscape. In the end of the project the overall impact of the project is examined: How many persons/organizations were reached (training sessions, social media etc.)? Did the participants feel they benefited from the project?
