TALVI – Climate change resilience for housing companies

Climate change has brought numerous new challenges to housing companies. Increasing rainfall, moisture, cloudiness, heatwaves, and the ever-rising cost of fossil energy must be taken into account in the decision-making and renovation projects of housing companies to ensure that properties remain healthy and safe to live in while retaining their value. The pressures brought by new directives for more climate-resilient construction practices create uncertainty in the housing company field: what concrete steps can we take, and how do we approach them, so they get done? The need to develop best practice solutions for housing companies, i.e., easily implementable tools and models for adapting to climate change, has become apparent when working with housing company decision-makers. There is no lack of information, but it may not be easy to find, applying it to one's own situation can be difficult, or its complexity can stall decision-making. In the project, current tools available to housing companies are reviewed, their usability is analysed, and suggestions for improvements and enhancements are made. If necessary, more user-friendly implementations or better instructions are created. Models and example documents developed in the project are tested in practical situations. The outcome is a set of recommendations and models of management tools for housing companies. The project observes building inspections in pilot housing companies, as well as the planning and implementation of renovation projects, proposing additions from the perspective of climate change. The outcome is the creation of a service framework and sample phrases to be used in condition assessment reporting. The takeaways of the project are documented, and they are communicated nationally. As an outcome of the project, the housing company field will have access to new tools that will allow considering challenges posed by climate change in the planning and implementation of renovation projects.
