Smart Energy Communities

Energy communities offer opportunities for a fairer energy transition. Energy communities have an important role in increasing the uptake of renewable energy sources and diversifying energy production. The project aims to create new energy-efficient, digital and technological methods and services for the energy communities of the future. The aim is to create new sustainable and profitable business models for energy communities. In particular, the project will focus on energy communities across urban and peri-urban areas, the optimal use of energy resources in energy communities and sectoral integration in energy communities and their digital solutions. The project has two main objectives: policy development and increasing knowledge. These objectives can be broken down into the following sub-objectives: A) Policy development for energy communities 1. Creating digital twins of energy communities and the blockchain peer-to-peer networks within them (targeting housing associations, small houses & businesses) 2. Developing the internal processes of energy communities 3. Developing methods for energy trading 4. Research and development of the potential of consumption flexibility 5. Assessing the environmental impact of energy communities B) Increasing knowledge and awareness of the energy community 1. Collect the latest national and international information on energy communities and their activities. 2. Promote the emergence of all forms of energy communities at regional level. 3. Communicating the benefits, opportunities and barriers of energy communities between buildings. The project will be implemented in close cooperation with businesses and stakeholders in the region. Project activities will support the development, piloting and commercialisation of carbon neutral products, materials, services or production methods by SMEs. The project will take the first steps towards decentralised energy communities. The project will explore a model of net energy production through digital twins and simulations and intra-community energy trading in a peer-to-peer network. The project will explore and test the potential of blockchain technologies for energy communities and actively communicate the results in a wide range of ways. The project's data collection and communication will increase the visibility and social acceptability of energy communities and provide support for decision making.
