Renovation of rail infrastructure at Joensuu cargo port

The main objectives of the project are: 1. to develop Joensuu cargo port into a multimodal transport hub as intended in the Joensuu city strategy 2. to promote business and growth of companies operating in North-Karelia by improving logistical connections 3. to improve traffic safety in rail logistics and in the track area 4. to promote low-emission rail transport as a part of logistics chains City of Joensuu will carry out the renovation of the rail infrastructure (length appx. 3750 metres) leading to Joensuu's deep-water port. Harbour track is located in Joensuu's Penttilä district. Renovation measures include e.g. replacement of rails and railroad ties, renewal of asphalt surfaces, repair of track width and removal of vegetation. The measures taken in the project will improve the port area's logistics and the port's competitiveness will be increased. The project fulfills the requirements of the TEN-T port network. The project strengthens the development of the Joensuu cargo port into a multimodal logistics hub that serves the entire region of Eastern Finland. The measures to be done within the project correspond to the improvement of business conditions and logistical accessibility for the businesses in Eastern Finland. In addition, the project implements the goals set in the strategies and programs of the city of Joensuu and North Karelia region.
