Circular Buildings

The strong growth of the capital region poses many challenges for the area. The accelerating loss of biodiversity and the climate crisis bring new requirements for the construction sector to reduce carbon footprint and consumption of natural resources. The war in Ukraine and the following reconstruction already significantly affects the availability of construction materials throughout Europe. The changing operating environment directly affects urban structure and makes predicting the future challenging. It is critical to implement sustainable circular solutions in the real estate and construction sector in regions that have a significant impact in terms of population, growth, investments, and emissions. The challenges the capital region is facing cannot be solved by municipalities alone; cooperation is needed both among municipalities and with the private sector. In the project, Espoo, Helsinki, Vantaa, and HSY collaborate to promote the transition of the capital region's construction and real estate sector to a carbon-neutral circular economy. The goal of the project is to support the emergence of sustainable and circular economy solutions that promote the most efficient use of existing building stock. This means keeping the resources used in existing building stock in circulation for as long as possible by extending the life cycle of buildings and promoting the reuse of materials generated during demolition. In the project, companies, research organizations, the city, and other stakeholders develop and implement sustainable solutions together to extend the life cycle of existing building stock. Solutions are sought to jointly defined challenges through an innovation challenge, and they are piloted in real urban environments. The project co-develops with stakeholders steering mechanisms and practices that are not generated quickly enough by current statutory steering tools or the market to adequately respond to the challenges of sustainable urban development. In addition, information is provided on the benefits of the circular economy and the effectiveness of measures to support decision-making. The results of the project reflect in various ways how the capital region promotes circular construction, innovation, and environmentally friendly practices in the construction sector. The goal of the project is to promote innovation and business in the capital region, creating regional vitality, growth, and competitiveness. The project is divided into three work packages. WP 1. Making the Capital Region a Leader in Circular Construction WP 2. Efficient Use of Existing Building Stock Life Cycle WP 3. Effective Methods for Demolition and Reuse Business The project starts on 1st of November 2024, and lasts for two years.
