KoKoLiike - Smart and Sustainable Solutions for Kotka City Transport System

KoKoLiike (Smart and Sustainable Solutions for Kotka City Transport System) project aims at creating solutions by which CO2 emissions could be decreased and traffic safety improved. In the project the solutions will be piloted and simulated both in real-life and virtual environments. The already existing data and the data to be collected and analyzed during the project will offer significant information for city and transport planning as well as technology developers and service providers. The Kotka City region will showcase as a unique piloting area for transport solutions as an integral part of attractive build and natural environments. The means of digitalization can be widely utilized in developing traffic and mobility as well as in service provision. Digitalization of traffic and mobility services aims to improve the functionality of the transport system, reduce the environmental and climate impacts of traffic, and increase safety. With the help of new and improved technological solutions and business models, it is possible to respond to the challenges caused by changing conditions. Smoothly and sustainably functioning transport system and good accessibility are key factors in attracting people to come to the regions. Digital tools bring opportunities to traffic and city planning as well as to the development of services, which would not be possible or at least would not be cost-efficient to implement with so-called traditional methods. The Kotka City region offers an interesting environment for the development and implementation of digital solutions for traffic and mobility. The more specific target area in the project is Kotkansaari and especially the Kantasatama area, which is developing into a significant educational and research institute campus area, an event and tourism area, and a business area. There is a lot of traffic in a geographically small area, and traffic volumes are predicted to grow significantly with the increase in services. The project's target area covers also the main routes leading to Kantasatama. These routes consist of many types of transport infrastructure, including road and railway bridges as well as bridges for pedestrians and micro-mobility. Ensuring the safety of people living, working, studying and visiting on Kotkansaari is one of the main focus areas of the KoKoLiike project. Accordingly, the possibilities for rapid reaction in emergency situations threatening the safety of the target area are investigated by means of simulation, improving predictability and an almost real-time traffic situational awareness. In summary, the KoKoLiike project provides concrete implementable solutions, knowledge bases, data materials, illustrated utilization of digital solutions, replicable models and proposed measures to be utilized in improving transport system by promoting smart solutions, safety and zero emissions.
