Bio- and circular economy ecosystem in Southwest Finland | Biogas to business 2024-2026

The bioeconomy and circular economy ecosystem in Varsinais-Suomi | Growth from Biogas 2024-2026 is a joint project between Yrityssalo Ltd. and Lounais-Suomen Jätehuolto Ltd. from September 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026. The overarching principles of the project are: 1. Strengthening the competitiveness of local businesses and creating new sustainable business opportunities, as well as developing new product and service concepts aligned with the circular economy. 2. Enhancing waste management and nutrient cycles by leveraging the region's specific strengths and needs. 3. Improving energy self-sufficiency and security, as well as fertilizer self-sufficiency, and minimizing adverse environmental impacts. 4. Developing a network and operational model to enable the realization of an industrial-scale biogas plant. The project focuses on developing a biogas ecosystem, supporting circular economy and carbon neutrality objectives. It aims at enhancing the growth of circular economy-based business operations, improving waste management and nutrient cycles, fostering energy self-sufficiency, and improving environmental conditions. The project's activities are divided into four work packages: WP1. Activation of the Business Network and Launch of Ecosystem Activities, involves identifying and contacting key players in the biogas ecosystem, conducting in-depth interviews, and initiating collaboration and development. WP2. Data and Material Flow Compilation and Biomass Availability Assessment, involves collecting information on potential inputs for the biogas plant and investigating the possibilities for pre-treatment of mixed waste. WP3. Business Model - Innovation Activity - Invest in, aims at identifying the best-suited technologies, business and operation models, end products and their users, supporting innovation activities, and seeking openings for cooperation with investors. WP4. Communication, Conceptualization, and Administration, ensures the efficient dissemination and documentation of project results according to the project plan and guidelines. The project adheres to the EU and Finland's goals towards carbon neutrality, resource efficiency, and transition to a circular economy. The production of renewable energy and recycling fertilizers from organic waste offers new business opportunities for companies and agricultural entrepreneurs, reduces dependency on fossil fuels, and enhances resource efficiency in the region. The concrete results of the project include assembling the biogas ecosystem and initiating collaboration, compiling comprehensive and analyzed datasets on material flows, describing the most promising business and operational models, as well as identifying end products and users and sharing the obtained results. The target audience of the project includes rural businesses, the food industry, the logistics sector, as well as investors and technology suppliers for industrial-scale biogas plants. The novelty of the project lies in strengthening the circular economy and sustainable development by establishing a large-scale biogas ecosystem that integrates with other industrial processes, promotes agricultural sustainability, and supports the achievement of climate goals.
