MOCAP Systems in Gamifying Sports and Wellness Analysis

Motion Capture (MOCAP), i.e. motion tracking, is the recording of movements in a virtual format, and it can be captured with both suit sensors and cameras, from which the data can be edited, analyzed, studied and reproduced virtually. The higher education organizations and the education municipality association in Rovaniemi have multiple MOCAP development environments and motion testing environments, the purposes, and technical possibilities of which should be clarified, developed further and made available to a wider target audience. The MOCAPPE project (MOCAP Systems in Gamifying Sports and Wellness Analysis) develops forward the Sports Lab development environment of the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, the Testing & Training testing environment of Santasport Lapland Sport Institude and the XRLab of the University of Lapland in technological, functional, and physical terms with the project partners. The goal is to find out the added value, immersion, and experiences of VR and MOCAP technologies in exercise and sports performance and analytics, as well as in exercise and well-being experiences, as well as to develop the know-how of MOCAP technologies and the uses of development environments regionally with several user groups. The goal is to make the possibilities and benefits of given technologies available to everyone and to transfer knowledge and skills between the users of the development environments. This is implemented in the project by creating proof-of-concept demos and ready-to-use pilots using two use cases with several technologies (MOCAP, game engines, VR, physiological sensors, etc.), in cooperation with companies and other target groups of the project. Pilots are used to map out new innovative gamified exercise and sports performance opportunities in the development environments of Rovaniemi, and to explore the design and ergonomics of the virtual experience of physical activity and well-being. The main target group of the project are SMEs in the province of Lapland, and the other target groups are local athletes, coaches and sports students who are involved in the use case development processes. The project aims to increase well-being related to physical activity and expands the local know-how and uses of motion capture technology. With the help of RDI innovations, the project strengthens the regional cooperation between higher education groups and Lapland Education Centre, SMEs, sport colleges and students, and transfers current expert knowledge and know-how between all partners.
