SOLMU - New services for Helsinki region mobility hubs

The SOLMU project focuses on developing the business of mobility services, especially at mobility hubs located in traffic nodes, and the associated commercial service offerings, and on strengthening the regional ecosystem for the development of transport services. Improving service offerings is considered one of the most significant ways to make public transportation and travel chains more attractive, promote equal access to mobility, and reduce mobility poverty. This is required to achieve the shift from car traffic to more sustainable modes of transport, as targeted in urban, national, and EU-level strategies. In the SOLMU project, the specific context for mobility services is traffic nodes, which refer to places where different modes of transport intersect, such as various stations and feeder traffic locations. All of these have different features and opportunities for integrating new mobility services. This integration is referred to as a mobility hub. At the core of the SOLMU project is the development of mobility services from a business perspective and building a regional transport service development ecosystem. The project aims to: 1. Enhance the product and service development of SME actors in the target group, particularly towards gaining competitiveness in foreign markets. This is achieved by promoting the development of piloting environments at nodes, offering support for product and service development, assisting companies in obtaining genuine feedback from user groups, and creating practices that best address the needs of transport nodes and mobility hub operations. 2. Strengthening the regional smart and sustainable transport ecosystem. This ecosystem provides a framework for active dialogue at the regional level, and its operation is supported by jointly addressing common challenges related to travel chains across sectors. 3. Boost the operations of SMEs in the target group, particularly in international networking and collaboration, commercial and RDI cooperation, the development of accessible solutions, and data-driven decision-making. This is accomplished by offering opportunities and co-development possibilities related to these themes, as well as business development support. Larger companies in the region are encouraged to become mentor companies in order to support the emergence of new innovations from the SME sector. Experiences, lessons learned, and new networks gained through the project enhance the development opportunities for companies during the project. They also have broader impacts on product and service development, such as increased turnover, over the longer term. The strengthening of the regional mobility service ecosystem also aligns with the objectives of national urban ecosystem agreements. Cities facilitate and support active dialogue across sectors and support business activities. The project engages 50 mobility service companies in the Helsinki metropolitan area in co-development and the enhancement of their own product and service production. It is expected that 15-20 new product and service innovations will be developed, and 8-12 mobility service pilots will be conducted. As indirect results, the attractiveness, functionality and accessibility of new mobility services, as well as public transportation and travel chains, will increase. Consequently, private car usage decreases, leading to a reduction in traffic emissions, congestion, and safety hazards. New innovations refer to services, products and processes that are new or create regional added value. Commercial development ideas between companies or the city that arise during the project are also counted as new innovations in this context due to the limited project schedule. The project aligns well with the priorities of the European Regional Development Fund's Specific Objective 1.3, as well as the Uusimaa Regional Smart Specialization Strategy and principles of sustainable development and equality.
