In Finland, the actions of the social and health care sector (sote) in terms of mitigation and preparedness for climate change are behind compared to other sectors (SOSTE 2020), which is why there is a growing interest in the sector in climate and circular economy practices. It also reflects the need for sustainable development, especially in terms of waste management and resource consumption. Circular economy solutions in the social and health care sector include a strategic opportunity to redesign the way healthcare services are produced, creating processes and systems that are not only sustainable, but also reduce the carbon footprint and are more cost-effective. In Finland, environmental programs and pledges have been made and are being made in welfare areas (e.g. Päijät-Häme and South Karelia), the aim of which is to develop measures for own operations related to low carbon, sustainable development and the environment, which can reduce the environmental impact of the welfare area. However, according to the survey carried out during the preparation of the project, the private companies need new information and the development of know-how in the circular economy and material management, e.g. to reduce the amount of waste and improve recycling. The goal of the project is to develop solutions related to circular economy and material management functions, waste management and recycling of various materials with private companies in the social and health care sector. By utilizing the results of the project, companies in the social and health sector will be able, through new procedures, to reduce the costs of waste management, increase resource efficiency and reduce the company's environmental load and carbon footprint. By developing methods of operation, we also proactively prepare for, among other things, the new packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPRW) being prepared in the EU and changes to the waste act. In addition, as a result of the project, environmental awareness-promoting activities and communication will reach a wide group of operators in the South Karelia region, which will promote the cooperation of public and private actors to promote the circular economy and support the transition of the South Karelia region towards a low-carbon and green economy.
