The goal of the “Sustainable Innovations in Security and Defense Sector” project is to promote sustainable innovations. Changes in the European security environment and sustainability requirements affect all industries, including defense industry companies and other industrial companies with potential solutions for the security and/or the defense sector. Companies and research institutions in the region have the capability to respond to the development of the global market and the desire to be involved in strengthening Europe’s strategic competitiveness and technological self-sufficiency. The region’s companies have top-level expertise in the field, which can be used to build new innovative and sustainable business. During this decade, the sector may create high-productivity jobs that significantly generate export revenue and attract international investments. The defense sector faces pressure to provide solutions much faster than traditional development cycles, but the long development and sales cycles of the industry still slow down the market entry of new innovative companies. The project’s activities also promote the access of companies and research organizations to international projects and initiatives that generate sustainable innovations. The project highlights various market-driven opportunities for the target companies and research institutions to develop sustainable innovations and solutions. The project serves as an inclusive innovation and development platform, identifying and bringing together needs and actors in the target group, promoting co-development. Considering the business needs of companies regarding sustainable innovations, some services can be offered as de minimis advisory services tailored to individual companies. The promotion of market-driven sustainable security and defense industry innovations in the project consists of the following actions: Identifying the sustainable performance and technology needs of end-users and the international security and defense industry, both as a continuous process and as a need and business opportunity assessment and its update, business opportunity information sessions, thematic co-development workshops, and increasing industry understanding, as well as company-specific advisory services related to sustainable security and defense industry innovations and the development of related business. Alongside the promotion of market-driven sustainable security and defense industry innovations, the project also promotes research and development opportunities in the sustainable defense industry. The project covers a wide range of topics related to sustainable security and defense industry solutions, which the project focuses on. Examples include new digital solutions that promote sustainability, automation solutions, low-carbon energy solutions, etc. A survey conducted for the target group prior to the project in the project area has provided a justified basis for the project’s measures. The project supports the objective of the “Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021–2027 – EU regional and structural policy programme” to increase RDI intensity and promote business-driven innovation activities, considering climate and sustainable development goals. The project supports the objectives of the Pirkanmaa Regional Program 2022-2025 and the choices of smart specialization. The project’s measures target a wide range of sectors and promote business renewal and the acceleration of research, development, and innovation (RDI) activities. The activities align with Pirkanmaa’s missions: creating value from knowledge and expertise, responsible business renewal and growth, and strengthening internationalization. Regarding smart specialization, the change in the European security situation is both a major challenge and an opportunity for our region’s companies, including manufacturing industries and other high-value-added expertise, such as digitalization. The project is related to responsible industrial renewal and controlled sustainability transition. The project’s activities support co-development and serve as an inclusive innovation platform where new solutions are developed based on needs.
