The Tampere Innovation Environment Development Project is designed to position the city on the international stage as a leader in sustainable smart city development. The goal is to establish Tampere as a provider of world-class testbeds, pilot, and demonstration environments, attracting both domestic and international actors and offering innovative frameworks for businesses. The project focuses on three key themes: testbed, pilot, and demonstration environments; supporting the innovation activities of SMEs driven by business needs; and strengthening innovation capabilities in the smart city theme. The project is carried out through three work packages. In the first work package, the current opportunities for testbeds, pilot, and demonstration environments in the area are mapped out, and clear and marketable service descriptions are created to attract companies to the region's innovation platforms. At the same time, cocreation is coordinated for key figures of these environments to define common objectives. The second work package focuses on designing and piloting an innovation service for SMEs and service concepts to promote innovation, responding to service needs identified through a survey of companies. The third work package develops models and practices to enhance innovation capabilities at the interfaces of the City of Tampere, fostering the emergence of new innovations, data sharing, and promoting collaboration between the city, ecosystem actors, and businesses. The project aims for a systemic change that broadly serves the entire innovation landscape in the region. It represents a significant step toward strengthening Tampere’s position in innovation and smart city development while laying the foundation for long-term sustainable growth and success in the area. The project implements the Innovation Ecosystem Agreement between the City of Tampere and the Finnish government.
