Innocity Joensuu 3 -Innovation in city of Joensuu

Innocity Joensuu 3 -Innovation in city of Joensuu is a project managed by the city of Joensuu, which is implemented as a parallel project with Business Joensuu Oy, the University of Eastern Finland, Karelia University of Applied Sciences and Natural Resources Center (Luke). The project implements the Innovation Activity Ecosystem Agreement 2021–2027 drawn up and signed between the city and the state in 2021. The implementation period of the project is June 1, 2025 – June 31, 2026. The implementation of the project is divided into three work packages: TP 1 CITY AS A R&D PLATFORM TP 2 INNOVATION COMMUNICATION TP 3 CO-DEVELOPMENT AND COORDINATION In work package 1, a survey of forest bioeconomy and photonics RDI measures related to the forests owned by the city of Joensuu will be prepared. The mapping matches the needs of researchers, the city and companies into a common overall picture, on the basis of which a plan and cooperation model for R&D activities for the next few years will be drawn up with partners and cooperating companies. The project promotes the realization of innovative public procurements by increasing active meetings between pioneering photonics and forest bioeconomy companies and those who decide on public procurements in the city of Joensuu. Students of multiple different fields will be also included in the process. Ideas for projects in the urban environment, such as the development of the Mehtimäki will be collected from the students especially from the perspective of forest bioeconomy and photonics innovations. Work package 2 will implement a communications campaign specifically targeted at national and international stakeholders. Through this campaign awareness about digital forest expertise in Joensuu and data-based solutions and their effects will be raised . The campaign utilizes data collected through forest and photonics research and the stories of top experts in the field. In addition, the digital decision-maker and influencer material for forest and photonics sectors prepared formerly in the Innokaupunki Joensuu project will be updated. As a result of the project, an information package will be compiled, presented and delivered to decision-makers from materials related to Joensuu's photonics and forest expertise prepared in recent years. In addition to these materiala and the information package, separate communication materials focusing on the themes of photonics and forest bioeconomy and the vitality of the Joensuu area will also be created for the needs of interest monitoring. As a result of work package 2, a photonics influencer communications campaign aimed at international stakeholders will be piloted, through which Joensuu as a photonics city will become known to the international public through light and visual arts. The target group of the measure is international photonics stakeholders, such as light art experts, media, companies, research institutions, potential business partners and the general public. The influencer campaign will pilot new ways to visibility and gaining foothold in international target areas with photonics expertise. The campaign will also search for companies, influencers and other organizations interested in photonics in Joensuu and attract them to visit and invest in Joensuu. Work package 3 will participate in the co-development and coordination of the implementation of the Innovation Activity Ecosystem Agreement 2021-2027. The work package will update the Innocity strategy of the City of Joensuu and its partners, the action plans of Photonics Joensuu and Forest Joensuu, and will participate in the work of the Photonics Joensuu and Forest Joensuu innovation groups.
