Towards a circular economy and sustainability reporting with data analytics

According to the Regional Program in North Savo, there is a strong need to develop digitalisation, which is seen as a key factor in renewing the region's business sector and enhancing competitiveness. The aim is to utilise smart technologies and digital solutions, such as data analytics and IoT solutions, especially in the bioeconomy and circular economy. The development of digitalisation also supports the availability of labour and skills as well as internationalisation. The project responds to the need to make data more usable and understandable in order to promote sustainable development in the North Savo region. The project promotes sustainable energy solutions, particularly visualizing solar and geothermal data based on business needs, develops waste flow management solutions and bio-waste sorting through joint campaigns by waste management companies and properties, promotes sustainable transportation solutions, utilizes open and research data, visualizes open data and makes it available, visualizes data from research projects, and informs North Savo companies and residents about sustainable development research projects and their impacts. The project also supports SMEs in meeting sustainability reporting requirements of large corporations and facilitates real-time data-based decision-making, enabling international operations and networking. The target group includes companies investing in sustainability efforts, such as solar energy, geothermal energy, recycling, production, research and development, sustainable housing, tourism, and transportation. Targeted companies represent the following sectors: real estate, construction, transportation, waste management, IT, renewable energy, and tourism. Some are public organizations collaborating with SMEs. The core focus addresses two main questions: how can sustainability technology and real-time data be used to market North Savo, and how can communication on sustainable development effectively reach company clients and local users? The project builds partnerships with companies needing visibility for their sustainability efforts and implements IoT solutions and visualizations to support business. The North Savo Regional Plan 2040 and Regional Program 2022‒2025 emphasize developing a bio- and circular economy cluster, fostering new production, innovations, entrepreneurship, and international business growth, alongside environmentally responsible companies. The project supports the implementation of the regional plan through its activities in sustainable development, renewable energy, waste management, and sustainability reporting.
