Development of the logistics infrastructure of the Puhos industrial area

The project will draw up plans for the further construction of the logistics infrastructure in the Puhos industrial area. Logistics areas serve all modes of transport. In particular, the plans focus on plans related to the expansion of the water and rail logistics and operating areas of the bioterminal and industrial area. The plans are the basis for the additional construction of the logistics infrastructure, the need for which has emerged after the completion of the transport system development plan project for the Puhos industrial area. In the aforementioned project, the rail and logistics areas leading to the harbour were planned, as well as the renovation and lighting of Teollisuustie. Baste on the plans, the construction of the Bioterminal began. The construction of the area will be completed by May 2026, the value of the investment is EUR 5.5 million, for which the City of Kitee received 70% investment support from the JTF Fund from the Regional Council of North Karelia. The construction of the track requires a new logistics and operational area, which will be planned and built partly in the water area. The bay between the port area and the railway will be filled with aggregate and a new operating area will be built there. Due to the increase in ship traffic, a second pier is planned for the port. Transportation of log bundles by water increased in the Puhos area. The log-dropping site will be moved from the Vanha Puhos area to the immediate vicinity of the bioterminal area. The log-dropping site will be located on an existing droping site, which will be renovated, and the necessary operating areas will be built. Enabling log-dropping operations for all operators in the Puhos area will significantly reduce traffic emissions and wear and tear on roads. Transportation of log bundles by water is the most environmentally friendly mode of transport. One complete floating raft is equivalent to 400 truckloads. The extension of the harbour track and additional logistics infrastructure, as well as the construction of a pier and a drop-off point, require a water law, related expert reports will be drawn up in this project, the actual water law process will be handled by the city of Kitee. The design work consists of four work packages. Work package 1. Expansion and construction plan of the logistics and operations sector Output: A written report on the construction plan with appendices Work package 2. Construction of a floating site and plan for building logistics connections Output: A written report on the construction plan with appendices Work package 3. Railway and construction plan for the extension of the harbour track Output: A written report on the railway and construction plan with appendices Work package 4. Expert reports related to the water act for the harbour track, the extension of the logistics area, the ship quay, and the water area of the log-dropping site. Output: A written report for the evaluation of permits according to the Water Act There are 20 companies operating in the Puhos industrial area, and their accessibility and operating conditions will improve.
