RETAKE – Circular Economy Business Models for Energy-Efficient Construction

The aim of this project is to generate knowledge on how developing business models can significantly reduce energy consumption in construction and buildings. According to the Carbon Neutral Finland 2035 – National Climate and Energy Strategy, the EU’s Fit for 55 package sets Finland’s final energy consumption target at a maximum of 250 TWh. However, with the measures decided so far, the estimated level is 275 TWh. This means that new energy-saving methods must be sought, such as reducing energy consumption in industrial production. One way to reduce production energy consumption is to decrease production volumes, thereby using less energy for raw material processing, industrial assembly, and logistics. In the RETAKE project, a model for applying take-back system to business plans will be co-created to reduce the need to produce building components. Take-back business refers to a model where the company that sold or manufactured the product benefits from the product’s long-term durability by, for example, managing the product’s aftermarket. This way, the company can reduce production while simultaneously increasing revenue. The project aims to involve at least 30 companies in the co-development of a business planning model utilizing take-back system, producing at least 3 pilotable new services. The project is divided into 5 work packages, executed synchronously in 4 phases. The themes of the work packages are: 1. Business feasibility 2. Service process and information management needs 3. Assessment of energy consumption and environmental impacts 4. Constraints of construction projects 5. Administration and communication The themes of work packages 1-4 represent four essential perspectives for business in the construction sector. Project Phases: 1. Modeling (8/2025-12/2025) 2. Adaptation (1/2026–11/2026) 3. Piloting (11/2026–8/2027) 4. Dissemination (6/2027–12/2027) In the modeling phase, examples of take-back business models from other industries will be examined, and an ecosystem mapping for take-back business will be outlined. In the adaptation phase, a model suitable for the construction sector will be co-developed for applying take-back system in business planning. Based on the model, companies will create business plans, from which 3 pilot services will be selected. The project will collect observations on the market reaction to the pilot services and their further development needs. In the dissemination phase, the project’s results will be compiled into a report, published as a unified guide for applying take-back models in the construction sector. The project’s results will be published in stages throughout the project. After phases 1-3, a webinar will be held to publish observations related to each phase. In phase 4, the final results and further development suggestions will be compiled into a report, and they will be presented in professional events, and articles of the main findings will be written for professional journals.
