SME-launchpad: Boosting International Growth

Finland’s small domestic market compels growth-oriented companies to internationalize at an early stage. For these SMEs, international growth is not merely an opportunity but a necessity. The innovation ecosystem in the Helsinki metropolitan area requires access to new global markets to thrive. However, its growth is hindered by a lack of funding, skilled professionals, and weak connections to international markets. Moreover, companies need better access to information about potential target markets and services that support internationalization. The project aims to address these challenges by introducing a novel operational model. At its core is a service model that combines customer engagement and ecosystem work into a seamless whole. In addition, the operational model utilizes strategic communication to cluster SMEs in the Helsinki metropolitan area into purpose-driven business groups, enhancing the scalability and efficiency of the service model. These groups, formed based on industry sectors or target markets, benefit from strong peer support and latent synergies. The service model being developed in the project supports companies either with new, tailored services or by guiding them more effectively to existing ones. This is achieved by integrating current services, stakeholders, and networks into a cohesive framework that supports companies on their path to internationalization. Through customer dialogue and close collaboration with various internationalization actors, gaps in the service network will be identified, and new complementary services will be developed for the metropolitan area. Active outreach through joint advisory services will engage companies and guide them onto the internationalization path. In collaboration with partners, companies will gain access to targeted services such as Market Entry programs, training sessions, and events. The project will also support companies in finding skilled professionals by working together with regional stakeholders. Growth and internationalization require talent, and to facilitate this, the project will establish a streamlined pathway to recruitment services and support mechanisms. With its new operational model, the project aims to foster the business growth of SMEs and open up new business opportunities by comprehensively improving the conditions for internationalization. The project is expected to increase employment and tax revenues during its implementation phase, with long-term effects extending well beyond its completion. The success of SMEs will attract new players to the region, including foreign investors, skilled professionals, and companies, further strengthening the Helsinki metropolitan area’s growth potential and appeal.
