This three year project focuses on improving energy efficiency in the Tampere region, promoting low-carbon practices, and increasing the use of renewable energy. The core objective of the project is to support the energy transition of the region's industry and logistics, develop new innovative energy solutions, and promote sustainability reporting. The project responds to the European Commission's ambitious proposal to reduce EU greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040. In the project's preparation, a critical need has been identified to strengthen the region's energy systems to ensure the availability of affordable and reliable energy. Accelerating electrification and utilizing digital tools are key means to achieve cost-effective carbon neutrality. The project consists of seven mutually supporting work packages, covering a wide range of measures to promote energy efficiency and low-carbon practices: 1. Analysis of Energy Consumption and Emissions: Analyze the Tampere region's energy consumption and emissions, collect comprehensive data on the energy system, and identify key stakeholders. 2. Promotion of New Energy Solutions: Identify and promote opportunities for the deployment of new energy solutions in the region and support research and development activities that enhance the region's competitiveness. Promote industry innovation efforts to accelerate the deployment of clean technologies. 3. Assessment of the Impacts of the Energy Transition: Assess the comprehensive impacts of the energy transition on society, the economy, and the environment by utilizing a digital twin. 4. National and International Networking: Build strong networks nationally and internationally and develop cooperation with other cities. Create conditions for business-driven research collaboration based on strong networks. 5. Comprehensive Security and Resilience: Focus on improving comprehensive security and resilience by developing cybersecurity and process safety measures. 6. New Technologies and Energy Efficiency: Develop and deploy new innovative technologies, such as carbon dioxide capture and storage, and improve the energy efficiency of district heating systems. 7. Assessment of Regional Economic Impacts and Communication: Assess the impact of the project's solutions on employment, tax revenues, and economic growth in the region. Develop a comprehensive communication strategy and inform stakeholders about the project's progress and results. The project is expected to significantly advance the Tampere region's transition towards a low-carbon energy system and reduce its carbon footprint. The project will also increase local energy production. The project will promote the deployment of new energy technologies and improve cooperation and knowledge exchange nationally and internationally. The project involves close collaboration with local businesses, research institutions, educational institutions, and authorities, and it receives funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the City of Tampere.
