"The Opportunities of Battery Storage in North Karelia – AKKUe" is a two-part project consisting of an investment project and a development project. The objective of these projects is to promote the utilization of battery storage as part of renewable energy production, energy communities, and electricity markets, while also enhancing regional grid stability and energy security. The investment project will implement three battery storage units in public buildings and establish a test platform and innovation environment to facilitate the development of new battery storage technologies and business models. These investments provide concrete pilot sites to test and evaluate battery storage solutions within energy communities and the power grid. The development project will analyze data generated by the investments and create optimization models, business concepts, and commercial applications to expand and improve the efficiency of battery storage utilization. Additionally, the project will model how battery storage can reduce the need for grid investments, improve energy security, and increase local self-sufficiency. This project contributes to regional and national objectives in North Karelia, such as advancing the green transition, improving the competitiveness of SMEs, and supporting the development of energy communities. It provides practical solutions and models that can be widely applied in the energy sector, municipal decision-making, and business development.
