Strengthening and securing Satakunta's bioeconomy - BIOVAHVA

In Satakunta, the reduction in peat production will cause changes. Actions are needed to maintain vitality. It is important to invest in RDI activities, including the development of new innovations, operating models, technologies and production processes and their introduction to entrepreneurs and into practice. One key sector in Satakunta is the bioeconomy including food production and the food chain, where targeted RDI measures are of great importance. This project focuses on improving research and innovation capacities and on the increased utilization of advanced technologies in bioeconomy. The aim is to pilot and deploy new technologies, innovations and production methods. The concrete objectives of the project are to reduce energy waste, increase the use of renewable energy, reduce energy costs for food production and bioeconomy, improve the use of biochar solutions, increase the use of more efficient biochar solutions, increase greenhouse production, reduce use of fertilisers, and increase and improve the use of circular economy solutions. The project will also develop an operational cooperation forum for RDI activities for bioeconomy in Satakunta, where RDI actors from research organisations and industry will work to define guidelines for the development of the bioeconomy. The project will implement 5 work packages comprising a total of 14 measures. Work package A Project coordination and communication Measure 1 Coordination Measure 2 Project communication Work package B Energy solutions for the bioeconomy Measure 3 Better use and storage of solar energy Measure 4 Biogas solutions, side streams and energy efficiency Measure 5 Use of waste heat in food production companies Work package C Innovative and diversified solutions for the food production environment and practical applications Measure 6 Pilot plantations of new bedding and energy-generating materials Measure 7 Pilots for new food, herbs and medicinal plants Measure 8 New opportunities for water management Measure 9 Improving the growth efficiency of greenhouses Measure 10 Improving the efficiency of plant breeding Work package D Circular economy and side streams in the food chain Measure 11 Recycling of nutrients from waste water in the food industry Measure 12 Improving the use of side streams Measure 13 Design of a pilot solution taking into account circular economy for greenhouse production Work package E Development of the Satakunta food industry innovation and competence cluster Measure 14 Developing RDI cooperation to a new level The project will result in the review, design and testing of the AgriPV concept and the related electricity storage implementation concept, a developed design model, an AgriPV database implemented on an electronic platform, a study on the possibilities of energy cooperation between different actors, more information to companies on the benefits of biogas and on the transition from fossil fuels to biogas, measures to increase energy efficiency and the use of thermal energy in companies, new potential bedding and energy production materials, pilots for the use of new plant varieties, pilots for more efficient water management to balance water flows and water levels in water bodies, pilot testing of nano-oxygenated irrigation water, pilot testing of a new biochar solution, exploration of the potential for nutrient recovery from waste water in the food industry, better use of side streams and more effective RDI cooperation in the bioeconomy sector. The results of the project are publicly available. The results of the project will have a major impact on the functioning of the bioeconomy and the food chain, and disseminating and communicating the results to all actors is a key part of the project's communication. Communication material will be included on the project website. In addition, articles in trade and local newspapers, social media and regional events and workshops will be used.
