Higher added value biochar and its value chain - ARVOHIILI, investments

In Kymenlaakso’s JTF transition plan, low RDI activities and companies’ inability to develop themselves have been identified as weaknesses of the region. The main goal of the ARVOHIILI project is to diversify and strengthen the regional economy by creating new business opportunities and jobs, as well as by raising the level of expertise and general willingness to develop. As a result of the project, new raw material flows to produce biochar will be found, the processing degree of the biochar will be increased, new applications will be found, and a market will be created for biochar products. Biochar is more about a product group than an individual product, because the properties of biochar are influenced by, among other things, the raw material used, its pretreatment, pyrolysis processing parameters and posttreatment. For this reason, the production of optimal biochar is a complex process, where several factors need to be addressed. The potential uses of biochar are also versatile, because the properties can be modified according to the needs set by applications. The innovation solutions related to the production and use of biochar will create business opportunities both for companies already located and for companies that are considering locating in the area. The competence and circular economy solutions developed in the project will increase the attractiveness of the area from the point of view of industrial investments. ARVOHIILI, investments project improve the RDI facilities of the region, thus increasing the ability to participate in international and competitive funding projects, as well as serve companies better. Broader value chains can be seen emerging around the companies participating in the project or belonging to the project’s target group, which, if successful, will also generate synergistic benefits for other industries. Horizontal principles, gender equality and equality are taken into account throughout the project. The project follows Xamk’s equality plan. The main theme of the project is sustainable development, all aspects of which are considered in the operations.
