Replacement of peat with hamp

The project focuses on finding out and piloting three different application areas for fiber hemp. Areas of use are energy use, use in growth media and use as a building material. As for Ruokohelp, energy use is being investigated. Regarding the third plant selected during the project, the areas of use depend on the plant. The use of plant biomass as a source of energy, in building materials and growing media replaces the use of peat. Fiber hemp has been tried and is grown e.g. In Kuusamo, Ranua and Marrrasjärvi in Rovaniemi. Since cultivation of hemp and ruokohelp has already been explained in previous projects, in this project we will focus on promoting their beneficial use. Through the increase in use, the need for raw material increases, which means that the cultivated areas also increase. Cultivation can be done e.g. on former peatlands and abandoned fields. This is also how the project promotes the transition away from the energy use of peat.
