Construction of a Wood Heat Treatment Plant in Raahe

The use of CO2-emitting building materials and rainforest species in construction can be significantly reduced by increasing the use of thermally modified wood and replacing construction materials (pressure-treated wood, plastics, composites, concrete, metals) whose production generates high greenhouse emissions or is an environmental problem. The technology acquired for the company's use will also enable wood to be heat-treated in such a way as to significantly improve its resistance to decay, in accordance with studies carried out by a research institute outside the company. It can extend the lifetime of wood products used in construction many times over, allowing the carbon bound in thermal wood to be sequestered in buildings for decades. This is many times longer than the lifetime of untreated wood in similar applications. With this project, TWM Raahe Oy will build the most advanced thermal wood production plant in Europe to Raahe, with almost 100% of its production sold for export. The overall solution will include new and highly efficient in-plant special logistics and the most efficient optimised kiln loads with special equipment and the most advanced solutions in digital production technology control in the industry. The new technical solutions and equipment allow wood to be efficiently heat treated to decay resistance classes 1 and even class 1+. The durability of these classes is well illustrated by the fact that they have been awarded, for example in Japan, a certificate of resistance to termites (AQ-219-K1-1). Typically, Durability Class 3 or 2 thermal wood (Thermo D Thermal Wood Association standard) is currently produced on the market, but TWM Raahe Oy is also able to produce the best rot resistance grade when customers want to buy it. The management team to be recruited and the specialist experts who will partner the company, as well as the future specialised training of staff organised by the TE Office, represent the most advanced international expertise in the sector. The overall solution for the new plant will also include the location of the factory in the immediate vicinity of the freight port of Raahe. This location will allow the shipments from the immediate vicinity of the plant to reduce emissions and costs of upstream shipments to export customers to a fraction of the previous level by eliminating long truck journeys to the domestic export port. The good location and its first stage investment will allow the company to grow to take advantage of the waste heat from the nearby large-scale industry. This will give TWM Raahe Oy a highly valued and significant ecological competitive advantage among international customers and consumers, as well as partner companies, who respect environmental values. The company has a long-term cooperation with 3 to 6 wood product companies in the surrounding area for the procurement of sawn timber and planing. These companies and their own subcontractors and partners form a very significant regional network of companies supporting export activities, with sufficient resources to grow and develop with TWM Raahe Oy in the coming years. TMW Raahe Oy will employ 22 people in its own operations and more than 40 people in its partner companies such as sawmills and planing mills and their partner companies when the first phase is completed. In addition, the company's indirect impact and strong growth will create new and significant economic benefits and new growth and job opportunities for forest owners and other stakeholders in the region.
