Energy wood terminal in Kuusamo bio and circular economy park

The aim of Town of Kuusamo is to invest in a new industrial area, Kuusamo bio and circular economy park, which aims to develop circular economy, increase the added value of wood and sustainable forestry, as well as investments in accordance with the strategy of the Town of Kuusamo. Currently wastewater treatment plant (built in 2021) is situated in the area and a new road connection from highway 20 is being built to the area. The implementation of the project is intended to speed up the investments of the bio and circular economy park, support the development of the area and increase the attractiveness of the area. Regarding the implementation of investments, several companies are targeted in the area, both larger energy producers and small and medium-sized companies. The project includes 6 hectares large energy wood terminal (asphalted field). The terminals currently used in Northeast Finland are small and scattered in logistically challenging locations. There is a great need for an asphalt-covered and electrified terminal and it brings significant development opportunities, e.g. for the procurement of energy wood, forestry and cost management of logistics. The aim of the project is to to provide large and high-quality storage and processing area for materials for the companies at bio and circular economy area to improve their logistics and transport operations. The project advances new heating plant to be placed in the area as quickly as possible and thus enhances the transition of district heat production to the use of wood-based fuel as well as ensures the adequacy of district heat production both in terms of seasonal fluctuations and reliability of supply. The project enables companies to locate in the bio- and circular economy park area, to increase business activity and to create workplaces as quickly as possible. The project also enhances the development of the energy wood market in the Northeast of Finland.
