Only a few new companies in the health and life science sector have emerged in North Ostrobothnia in recent years. There are, however, opportunities for significant growth in business activities, as there is high-quality research activity in our area, as well as versatile technology companies whose abilities can be utilized for the development of future healthcare solutions. The goal of the project is to build an incubator that has been a missing piece of OuluHealth's ecosystem, to boost the emergence of new companies. The health and life science sector needs an industry-specialized incubator because new companies need industry specialized support from the beginning. The most significant of these special features is the strong regulation, which makes it a slow process for companies to enter the market. Due to the long and expensive development phase, it is important to identify early on the innovations that meet healthcare needs. Many incubator functions, especially activating operations, are carried out in cooperation with other startup and business development operators in the region. The goal of the project is to pilot the first health and life science business incubator in the Oulu region based on the concept built in the "Regional cooperation in incubator activities" project (A78109). Lessons and experiences from the previous projects are also utilized in the piloting of the incubator. The goal of the project is to create new health and life science companies and business operations in North Ostrobothnia, which promote the commercialization of new research innovations and the creation of new jobs, utilizing e.g. the demand driven co-creation model developed in the area. The goal of the project is also to further develop the incubator model, ensuring the functionality of the concept and to create an action plan and business model to establish the incubator after the end of the project. As a concrete result of the project, a health and life science incubator will be established. The incubator has solid content that considers the specific needs of the industry, to support the development of the business idea of the teams and companies participating in the incubator operation. In addition, physical premises for the health and life science incubator are located in Kontinkangas. As a result of the project, a new operating model will be created, which helps identifying business opportunities and encourages and activates entrepreneurship, especially in the health and life science industry. Also a new operating model for faster and earlier internationalization of health and life science start-up companies will be created, as well as a set of indicators that enables the systematic development of operations. As a concrete result of the project, a permanent operating model for the incubator will be created. The project brings vitality to the region, increases the number of growth-oriented health & life science companies operating on the international market, strengthens employment, diversifies the region's business life, and strengthens the region's economy. The project further strengthens regional cooperation and opens new opportunities for cooperation between different actors. The project also fosters the development of the digital health RDI center of future, OYSTER, and strengthens Oulu's position as a pioneer in digital health, which in the long term strengthens Oulu's role and position internationally. In the long term, the results of the project can also have a positive effect on the location of new companies in Oulu, the number of investments in the industry, and the attraction of international labor to the region.
