Waterfowl restoration of Lake Kuivasjärvi (Pikkuselkä)

This project concerns a waterfowl habitat restoration of severe overgrowth Pikkuselkä which is part of Natura 2000 of lake Kuivasjärvi in Alavus. The overgrowth of Pikkuselkä and the related weakening of the bird population are the result of the very intensive use of land in the catchment area, for which the measures being applied for are seeking a solution. The area of the Pikkuselkä catchment area (47 km2) is 2.2 km2 of peat extraction area, or 4.7%. Peat extraction is thus a significant form of land use that burdens Pikkuselkä. The project is primarily concerned with waterfowl restoration for waterbirds. The restoration measure is dredging, which triples the number of open water areas in Pikkuselkä and improves the flow of water. The project also improves water quality by removing nutrients and solids. The impact area of the waterfowl restoration project is the entire Pikkuselkä, 75 hectares. The extent of dredging is 7.2 hectares, and the mass is 72,000 m3. The aim of increasing the number of open water areas is to re-establish several species of birds lost as a result of overgrowth in the area as part of the breeding species. At the same time, the conservation criteria of the Kuivasjärvi Natura 2000 area are strengthened, which has been weakened by overgrowth resulting from the load.
