Developing innovation activities by activating business networks (ACTIVE)

In the recently completed projects of the Lapland University of Applied Sciences, for example 360 LCI DEV, Tequäly and Clusterized, there was active cooperation with Lapland companies, and through the cooperation, a wide range of needs in the areas of technological capabilities and green transition have emerged. The needs concern know-how, resources and the development of new solutions. In particular, giving up peat production will cause changes in the Lapland business structure in terms of jobs, products and services. Business-oriented innovation is the solution to this. The development of innovation activities by activating business networks (ACTIVE) project supports the adverse effects of abandoning peat production by supporting new business activities. The project supports the development of innovative and intelligent solutions across various industries. The goal is to create fast, low-carbon and carbon-neutral solutions while promoting digitalization and at the same time creating opportunities for new business activities. The solutions are implemented as public technology pilots, the needs, ideas and phenomena related to their implementation are collected from SMEs in the region. In order to achieve a wider impact, the project invests in cooperation between different industries and expertise groups and the smoothness of network-like operations. In the project, agile solutions are created by coordinating and connecting companies and business networks, where in addition to the producers of the actual products and services, there are also entities involved in product development. As companies invest in rapid product development concepts, companies, business networks and innovation centers change and develop. The resources of Lapland's SMEs are small, so in order to support companies and business networks, support is needed for the development of innovation activities, which strengthens know-how and innovation activities. This happens by promoting the development, piloting and commercialization of products, materials, services and production methods of SMEs, as well as the introduction and utilization of new technologies. The support is made possible through active cooperation, where innovation centers, financiers and companies work together to develop the region's competitiveness in relation to products and innovations. It is particularly important to develop the development environments, service concepts and capabilities of the innovation centers in order to lead the area's SMEs on the path of growth and renewal. As a result, 10 technology experiments will be created, based on which Lapland companies will be motivated to invest in their own services, product development and product development. At the same time, the innovation activity of the Lapland University of Applied Sciences improves and the ability to promote the renewal of Lapland's business life develops to a new level to respond to the structural change caused by the abandonment of peat production. In addition, the openness of companies to operate in the business network is supported. Transparency, awareness of the business network and trust develop and increase the economic activity of companies and thereby employment, new products and services. As a result of the project, new jobs will be created mainly in the development environments of Tornio, Kemi and Rovaniemi. Depending on the industry, jobs created especially in tourism, arctic conditions and cold climate applications, natural resources and food production are more widely located in the Lapland region. It is estimated that there will be two jobs created immediately, but the activity that develops innovation activities has great potential in the long term. Support is brought to this activity in the form of fast prototypes learned in the Tequ concept and product development support. In Lapland, peat production is mainly concentrated in a few areas in Keminmaa, Tervola and Ylitornio. In recent years, peat production has decreased throughout Finland due to environmental reasons, and no new investments related to peat production have been made in the Lapland region. Finland has set a goal to abandon the use of peat in energy production by 2030.
