Need: Ending peat production will cause major changes in the region's SME sector, the impact of which will also extend far beyond the peat sector, and as a result of the transition, the region's business activities will further weaken. Direct and indirect services will be lost by around €50 million by 2030. The economic structure of Kymenlaakso is narrow and the number of small and medium-sized enterprises is limited. The region also has a lower-than-average employment rate and a low level of education. There are challenges in the employment of young people, and the working life skills of them do not always match the employer's wishes. Highly skilled and international experts do not find employment well enough in the area and at the same time some companies struggle with the availability of skilled labour. The project will create measures to diversify the regional economy, internationalize and improve employment in the context of the green transition and global crises. The imminent shutdown of peat production will have a direct impact on unemployment in the region and there may be additional indirect jobs at risk as economic activity declines in peat production areas. The unemployed and those under threat of unemployment have too little relevant skills to the region's growth companies and industries with growth potential. Job seekers in the area may also have a lack of working life skills that makes recruitment difficult. The project combines people working in small and medium-sized enterprises in the region, higher education professionals, international and vocational education and training professionals, as well as people who are at risk of unemployment and find it difficult to find employment. The project supports unemployed and disadvantaged young people in finding employment and provides companies with new recruitment and orientation methods. Objectives: 1. Need mapping and customized training content for people involved in the project. Identify and interview people in the project target group in order to gain a better understanding of their needs. Based on the interviews, micro-studies, workshops and trainings are tailored for the target group together with partners. 2. Survey and indicators. The aim is to gain a deeper understanding of the problem at hand so that other work packages in the project can more accurately address the bottlenecks that prevent individuals from developing their skills and, on the other hand, regional actors from providing them with jobs. It is therefore a question of solving the problem of matching working life in the Kymenlaakso region. In addition, the aim is to investigate the usability of technologies such as artificial intelligence in working life and thereby provide new kinds of keys for job seekers to improve their own position in the labour market. 3. Skills, networks, employment. The aim is to repair the weak employment situation in Kymenlaakso by providing tailored training, accelerate services and networking opportunities aimed at increasing the opportunities for people in the target group to find employment and create trust among different actors in the ecosystem that is an essential factor for regional development and success. 4. Employment accelerator to support youth employment. In addition to Kouvola, the operating model and development process Living Lab are also taken to locations in rural areas. Activities are carried out in a variety of spaces suitable for development and encounters, where young people and employers/entrepreneurs are met. Piloting directly and indirectly increases the employment and training of young people. Results: Breaks in young people's educational paths will decrease, education will increase and employment will improve. Companies are more able to respond to their competence needs in a more targeted manner, and their recruitment capabilities are also developing. Impact: The project will diversify the region's economic structure, increase employment and strengthen cooperation between RDI activities and companies in the region.
