The Ounasvaara area is a central part of Rovaniemi's tourist attraction. The goal of the Ounasvaara cycling route development and sustainability project is to create conditions and opportunities for increasing year-round cycling tourism in the Rovaniemi region. The project aims to develop Ounasvaara into a versatile and internationally appealing year-round cycling destination that generates new business, new enterprises, and employment opportunities for the area. The trails built on Ounasvaara are designed to provide diverse and safe cycling experiences for cyclists of different skill levels. The implementation of the routes will adhere to international standards, taking into account environmental, ecological, and cultural perspectives. By directing mountain biking onto official trails, we aim to minimize the potential negative impacts of cycling on nature. The economic impact of the project on the local economy will arise through new program services, bicycle rentals, maintenance, as well as accommodation and restaurant services. Indirectly, the project will benefit transportation, commerce, and other businesses providing ancillary services to tourism.
