Peat Bogs to Wetlands

The goal of the "Peat Bogs to Wetlands" project is to restore decommissioned peat production areas. This will be achieved by water management and constructing them into multifunctional waterfowl wetlands. Additionally, the project aims to rehabilitate water areas impacted by peat operations. The objective is to initiate a development where the hydrology of peat bogs, drastically altered from their original state, returns as close to the natural condition as is feasible and reasonable in the current context. The process of hydrating and flooding the altered peat bogs creates vital habitats for endangered bird species, facilitating the restoration of sites and the recovery of plant species. Simultaneously, carbon sequestration at the sites is enhanced, and water and greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. The project implements measures that go beyond the current norm by directing water from isolation ditches and drainage areas to the site. This ensures that the sites are reintegrated into the water cycle of drainage areas. This is essential to create favorable conditions for the site's restoration, confirm the adequacy of water flow, enhance water protection and purification efficiency, and improve sustainable water management, flood dynamics, and flow control capacity in the area. The surrounding condition of the sites is also expected to improve during these measures. The project aims to initiate a comprehensive monitoring program for collecting new data on the post-use effects of peat production areas, which is intended to continue even after the project's completion. The goal is to establish model post-use sites for peat production areas across different regions of Finland, with wide communication and information dissemination to various stakeholders. Through communication and outreach, the project aims to promote environmental awareness and the replication of successful practices by other stakeholders. The project strengthens collaboration between Metsähallitus' responsibility areas and local authorities, research and education institutions, associations, and businesses to ensure broad and impactful operations. The post-use habitat management measures for decommissioned peat bogs are mainly located in Northern Finland, with one site in Pirkanmaa. The project costs are distributed across regions as follows: Northern Ostrobothnia 83.9%, Kainuu 9.4%, and Pirkanmaa 9.4% (with 90% from Northern POPELY and 10% from Kainuu ELY). Targets and Actions by Regions: Iso Saarisuo (POP): Restoration of the natural state of a peat bog covering 12 hectares, along with stream restoration covering 0.09 hectares. Matkasuo (POP): Restoration of the natural state of a peat bog covering 90 hectares. Joutsensuo (POP): Restoration of the natural state of a peat bog covering 46 hectares. Kettusuo (Kainuu): Restoration of the natural state of a peat bog covering 9 hectares, along with stream restoration covering 0.25 hectares. Murronneva (Pirkanmaa): Restoration of the natural state of a peat bog covering 8 hectares. -In total, restoration of the natural state of peatlands covers 165 hectares, along with stream water restoration covering 0.34 hectares. This combined area of action is 165.34 hectares. The project period is from 2024 to 2027, led by Metsähallitus Wildlife Service Finland in collaboration with MH Forestry Ltd and MH Property Development. Collaboration is also established with Parks & Wildlife Finland.
