Strengthening the cybersecurity of industrial companies in Satakunta (Kytee)

The reduction of peat production in Satakunta requires additional investments in RDI activities, including the development of new operating models, innovations and production processes and their introduction to companies. Satakunta's JTF plan is guided by the principle of responsible action and the consideration of climate change mitigation and adaptation in all development work. The plan states that promoting ICT activities based on the smart specialisation strategy will strengthen the diversification and renewal of the economy. The development of energy, bioeconomy, circular economy and peat substitution solutions, innovations and business models and concepts have the potential to create sustainable growth in the local economy. The diversification of the regional economy section of the plan aims to create new business activities that will diversify the region and create new value chains and jobs. Regional economic renewal, business support R&D, new and innovative businesses and climate change management all require the introduction of new technologies and digital systems. In the future, the emphasis will be on the transition to a data economy and digital ecosystems. All of these will increase the need to address cybersecurity. Industrial infrastructure faces cyber threats every day, such as denial of service attacks, phishing and malware. Inadequate cyber security leaves an industrial company seriously vulnerable and the cost of a data breach is often very significant. Cybersecurity of industrial production equipment is part of industrial communication and internet security. Cybersecurity solutions protect the security, quality and productivity of critical systems. Examples of such systems include remote monitoring systems, control systems and process automation systems. Cybersecurity is essential for all machines and devices that are managed over a network. This is also necessary to ensure the competitiveness of industry in the region. The NIS2 Directive makes it even more important for industrial operators to invest in cybersecurity, especially as digital technologies become more deeply integrated into production processes. The Kytee -project focuses on strengthening cybersecurity in Satakunta's industry. The project aims to ensure that industry in the region complies with the requirements of the revised EU Network and Information Security Directive (NIS2) and meets the challenges of the modern digital environment. The Directive is an EU-wide cybersecurity legislation that defines the minimum measures to be taken by operators. The national application of the EU NIS2 Directive will start on 17 October 2024. Project objectives: - To raise awareness of cyber threats and cybersecurity among industry in the region. - Building a network of cooperation. - Improve the level of cyber security and resilience of industry in the region. - Ensure compliance with the requirements of the NIS2 Directive. Key actions: - Raising awareness of cyber threats and cyber security - Technology pilots and field testing - A cyber-secure training environment - NIS2 Directive and regulation Outcomes and impacts: - Strengthened cybersecurity in the region's industry. - Increased skills, confidence and security to operate in digital environments. - Competitiveness of the region's industry in supply chains and products where cybersecurity is essential - The RoboAI research centre has developed cybersecurity expertise to serve the region's businesses.
