Development of New Peatland Farming Based Business in the Kymenlaakso Region (SuoLiike)

Development of New Peatland Farming Based Business in the Kymenlaakso Region (SuoLiike)- project responds to the need to develop new income and business opportunities for the parties involved in the peat production chain in the Kymenlaakso region. The project focuses on identifying new, environmentally and commercially attractive plant species suitable for peatland cultivation, defining their commercially potential uses, from large biomass-based applications to high-value products such as biostimulants, and generally developing peatland-based production activities and product ideas. The project will explore sustainable farming activities in former peat production areas and how to achieve national and regional carbon neutrality targets in terms of natural carbon sinks and greenhouse gas emissions of peatlands and wetlands. The study will be carried out practically with measurements of greenhouse gases. The project will use a biochar blend to enhance plant growth through the pyrolysis of biomass, which is also a permanent storage of carbon in the peatland soil. The development work is carried out in active collaboration with experts of various fields and with the owners of peatlands in the Kymenlaakso region, peat entrepreneurs and farmers, making use of the multidisciplinary, available research data. The project will carry out studies on the key regulations for the identified business opportunities and on the support funding opportunities available for the early stages of the business.
