Becoming a Nurse for North Karelia

Through experimental development, the project seeks solutions to the growing shortage of experts in North Karelia, promotes the internationalization of the region and accelerates education and employment paths for people with a foreign background. The project has three objectives: 1) Develop and test a new employer-driven recruitment, implementation and employment model using the regions healthcare sector as a pilot platform 2) Develop a Finnish-language taught degree in nursing suitable for foreign speakers 3) Develop the process and support structure and promote both the employer's as well as the education provider's internationalization and internationalization at home. As a result there will be a new employer driven recruitment, implementation and employment model for foreign people and 25 foreign nursing degree students have began their studies and are part-time employed in public health care field in North Karelia during the project. After the project students will graduate and from the graduates a minimum of 75% will be employed as a nurse in the region. As soon as possible, the model will be taken forward in Karelia UAS outside this project. The aim is to run an annual employer partnership model that can be implemented in different languages in accordance with area's need at the time. It will be also possible to copy the model to other fields, especially those with employee shortages in the future. Through this project, in the future higher education will be more available for people from abroad and the model can also be used as part of a formal integration course for unemployed people. Through the outcomes it is possible to develop Supporting Immigrants in Higher Education (SIMHE) services for people who have studied their nursing degrees abroad and tailor the further training they require in order to work as a nurse in Finland. Employer-Education Provider partnership will be closer and Karelia University of Applied Sciences will be better equipped to meet the needs of the employer in providing further training and other support relating to multiculturalism to its staff members. Through internationalization and internationalization at home, positive attitude towards foreign people in the region will rise through which the recruitment of people from abroad will be easier and as a result the number of international students and employees in North Karelia will increase.
