SampoLAB

In the SampoLAB - workshop of skills project, an operating model is being piloted, where education and business services corresponding to the competence needs of the business world are taken outside educational institution campuses to places where there is no vocational or higher education. In the pilot, Saimaa Vocational College is the organizer of vocational education, LAB University of Applied Sciences is the organizer of higher education and the provider of business services. The piloting will be carried out in Luumäki municipality, where there is no vocational or higher education. The education and business services model being developed in the SampoLAB workshop project meets the skills needs of the local business life in new areas in South Karelia by combining studies, jobs and entrepreneurship. With the help of a cost-effective operating model, it is possible to produce experts, know-how and development for the needs of business life in the areas and localities where the need is. This increases the attractiveness of the regions as a place to live, the availability of labor for companies and the conditions for growth. The project idea arose from discussions with entrepreneurs in the framework municipalities of South Karelia. The aim of the project is: 1. To create a local, activity-supporting working life network that combines the development needs of companies, the municipality's economic life and the activities of educational institutions into a permanent partnership. 2. To bring education that matches the skills needs of the local business life outside of educational campus areas. 3. Employs young people, the unemployed, those interested in another field, returnees and immigrants in local companies, as entrepreneurs, and inspires them to pursue further studies. 4. Offer employees continuing education to supplement their skills. 5. Create a cost-effective training and development model that combines communal team learning with learning and entrepreneurship in companies. 6. Coach, support and spar with teachers and workplace counselors in their changing roles. The SampoLAB does not require facilities like school buildings, but learning takes place in working life-oriented projects and in close cooperation with working life. Studying is not necessarily degree-related, but can also be parts of degrees or complementary to skills. The model enables studying at different levels of education, from vocational basic degrees to professional and specialized vocational degrees, as well as higher education. The learning environment is a compact space (70-80 m²) in the central location of the community, suitable for team learning. The space serves as a home base for companies and student teams, offering a concrete, non-school-like place that supports social belonging and is easy to come to. The space also serves as a meeting place for students and the local business community, offering information on study and work opportunities as well as entrepreneurship services. Learning is supported by the possibility to use digital devices and remote connections in the learning environment. After the end of the project, a education and business services model is in use in South Karelia, where you can study according to the competence needs of working life and get services for business operations. After studies in SampoLAB people have a high rate of employment and entrepreneurship. The model can also be transferred to other localities, including outside the province .
