To work in the church!

The UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities, the 2030 Agenda, Finland's Government programme ending this spring, the Church action plan Actively involved and the United Nations programme for the rights of persons with disabilities 2019–2024 highlight the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities in society. Working and belonging to a work community have a significant impact on a person's experience of inclusion and identity. The central government has highlighted the employment of people with partial work ability and the importance of raising the employment rate also from the perspective of the national economy. There are approximately 30,000 people with intellectual disabilities in Finland, of whom 600 are in paid employment. It is estimated that between 3,000 and 6,000 people could be employed with the right kind of support. The aim of the Work in the parish - project is to support the education and employment of people with partial work ability and persons with disabilities in the Evangelical Lutheran parishes of Southern Finland. The project's measures in the employment of disabled people with partial work ability include planning and piloting a "Training path for people with disabilities to parishes". The training includes general contents related to working life and parish work, as well as a working life period in the parish according to an individual study plan. The work coach supports the student's acquisition of competence in parishes. For the acquired competence, the participant receives a badge that is used to identify his/her competence when moving on to vocational education. The badge also verifies the jobseeker's competence to the employer. As another measure, the project builds training on a digital learning platform to strengthen diversity skills for parish work communities. In addition, the project provides community coaching for parishes that accept a person with partial work ability into their work community. Through these measures, parish work communities are supported in welcoming people with partial work ability into the work community. In addition, the project will develop an operating model for the employment of people with partial work ability and material to support the recruitment of parishes. These measures are prerequisites for enabling persons with disabilities with partial work ability to integrate into the work community. The Finnish Federation of people with intellectual disabilities is responsible for evaluating the model piloted in the project. The evaluation examines the experiences of both disabled people with partial work ability and parish employees who participated in the pilot. In addition, the factors that have promoted and hindered the project's objectives will be examined. The results obtained through the evaluation will be used in the implementation of the project's measures and results after the project period. The measures and results of the project will be communicated already during the project period in plain language and through multiple channels. The organisations involved in the project communicate the activities and results of the project through their own communication channels to their stakeholders. The Church Board participates nationally in disseminating the results of the project to parishes.
