Mental health and substance abuse coaching for The SOTE professionals of the Central Finland welfare region and outpatient care (MIETE)

According to the national mental health strategy 2020–2030, mental health and substance abuse disorders are a major public health challenge and the need for mental health services has increased. According to an estimate, 50% will have a mental health/substance disorder during their lifetime. Almost 50% of disability pensions are caused by of disturbances. Mental health and substance abuse disorders cause suffering and impaired functioning for the patient and loved ones. The value of work lost due to mental health disorders in Finnish society is approximately 2.5 billion euros per year. Family support, a safe growing environment, everyday routines and rhythm, regular and healthy nutrition, social relationships, appropriate exercise and adequate rest are factors that protect mental health. Illness of a parent is a risk factor for the mental well-being of a child and young person, because a large part of mental illnesses breaks out during childhood and adolescence. The services would have to consider loved ones both as a resource and as those in need of support. According to Finnish studies, up to half of mental health and substance abuse disorders in primary care patients go unrecognized, and 25% of primary care patients have one of those disorders. Sufficiently early identification enables timely referral to consultation and prevention of worsening of diseases. Based on the research, the mental health and substance abuse skills of primary care must be increased. The goal of the project is to increase the expertise of professionals in the individual and comprehensive encounter of a somatically ill mental health patient and his family, both in the early stages of treatment and later as the treatment continues. The need for the project has been identified in the welfare region of Central Finland. The aim of the operating model is to give professionals tools to strengthen the resilience of the family and family members, to accept the illness, to understand it and to treat it, taking into account the mental health and substance abuse problem and its special features. The whole family needs psychoeducational information about the family member's illness and its effects on the patient and the family community. The aim is also to provide information on warning signs; about possible physical or psychological symptoms that limit the ability to function and are worrying, which are related to a possible beginning mental health or substance abuse disorder. By recognizing the warning signs, professionals know how to direct the patient to the right specialist consultation and follow-up procedures. Let's make use of ready-made metrics and surveys to address concerns. The SOTE professionals of the Central Finland welfare region and the private sector play a major role in appreciative and respectful patient encounters and support, increasing awareness and reducing the shame or stigma associated with the disease. With professionals there may be negative preconceptions/prejudices about mental health and substance abuse rehabilitators due to a lack of knowledge. Incorrect prejudices, values and attitudes weaken cooperation and the implementation of treatment. By increasing competence, awareness can be increased, and attitudes can change. After the training, professionals know how to use evidence-based good practices that promote the health and well-being of the most vulnerable population groups better than at present. The trainings will be launched for SOTE professionals in the KS Well-being area and in the private sector. The project utilizes well-proven meeting methods and produces an online material folder for SOTE professionals in health centers and outpatient care in the welfare area, as well as in the private sector. The training model and materials will be placed on the HYVAKS website and will be publicly available during and after the project. The project supports the goals of the Social and Health Center of the Future program, such as by increasing the mental health and substance abuse skills of health centers and outpatient care professionals, and their ability to meet, treat and guide patients, so that they can become stronger than they are today as equal members of society. The project is implemented through the following work packages: TP1 Situation mapping and joint planning for SOTE professionals in health centers and outpatient care and in the private sector. TP2 Training for health center and outpatient care professionals. TP3 Creating and implementing an operating model TP4 Communication and information sharing. The target group is SOTE professionals (hereafter SOTE professionals) of health centers and outpatient care in the welfare region of Central Finland, whose basic duties are other than psychiatric nursing work, such as health care staff in the bed wards of health centers, family services staff, e.g. health care nurses, oral health care staff, diabetes nurses and physiotherapists, podiatrists, nutritionis
